YOUR MOST COMMON QUERIES ABOUT DIVING, COURSES, GEAR, AND TRIPS

Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers!

We've compiled answers to help you get started and join the vibrant community of ocean explorers at The Submersibles. Whether you're curious about our courses or need advice on equipment, you’ll find the answers here.

What is The Submersibles?

The Submersibles is a PADI 5-Star Dive Centre in Singapore offering scuba diving courses, quality gear, dive travel services (through Adventours Travel) and actively involved in Ocean Conservation. Established in 2006, we are passionate about creating a safe and enjoyable experience for divers of all levels, as well as protecting the ocean we love. We are also a PADI Swim School, offering swim classes from babies to instructor level. Want to learn to dive in Singapore? Come join us! Learn more about us here.

What is the minimum age to start diving?

The minimum age is 8 years old for the PADI Bubblemaker programme, where children can experience scuba in a pool, and 10 years old for the PADI Junior Open Water Diver course. We offer these courses here.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to learn scuba diving?

Feeling comfortable in water is important on your journey to becoming a scuba diver. The course requires you to swim 200 metres and float/tread water for 10 minutes as part of the entry requirements. If swimming isn’t your strong suit yet, our PADI Swim School can help you build confidence before starting your scuba journey. Learn more here.

Do I need to buy my own scuba gear to start diving?

No, we provide all essential diving gear for our courses. However, having your own equipment for a personalised fit is recommended as you progress. Explore our equipment options here.

What beginner courses does The Submersibles offer?

We offer beginner-friendly courses that provide the perfect introduction to scuba diving. These courses are designed to ensure safety, build confidence, and foster a love for the underwater world. Our beginner courses include:

a.     PADI Bubblemaker Programme: Introduce your kids to scuba diving in a safe and fun environment. This pool-based experience is designed for children aged 8 and above, teaching basic scuba skills through games and interactive activities.
Highlights: A supervised, shallow-water experience to inspire young adventurers.

b.     PADI Open Water Diver Course: Your first step into the underwater world, the PADI Open Water Diver course equips you with essential scuba skills, knowledge, and the confidence to dive up to 18 metres. Perfect for teens and adults alike.
Highlights: A globally-recognised certification that opens the door to incredible dive sites worldwide.

Our beginner courses are taught by experienced instructors in a supportive environment, ensuring you/your child gain the skills needed to enjoy the wonders beneath the waves safely and confidently.

Is scuba diving safe?

Yes, scuba diving is safe! Divers receive proper training and follow internationally recognised safety procedures on every dive.

Before every dive, divers perform equipment checks, follow dive plans, and stay within their training limits. Our dive instructors also adhere to strict safety standards regarding equipment maintenance, supervision, and emergency preparedness.

What is the difference between a recreational diver, aspecialty-certified diver, and a professional diver?

Recreational divers dive for personal enjoyment and exploration, often within the limits of their training. Certifications like Open Water Diver (OWD) and Advanced Open Water Diver (AOWD) equip them with the skills to dive safely and confidently. See beginner courses here.

A specialty-certified diver has expanded their skills in specific areas, such as underwater photography, wreck diving, or deep diving, through additional courses. While they remain recreational divers, their certifications allow them to explore unique environments and enhance their diving experiences. See advanced courses here.

Professional divers, such as PADI Divemasters (DM) or Instructors (OWSI), go a step further by completing leadership and teaching-focused training. They are qualified to supervise dive activities, lead groups, and teach others to dive. Unlike recreational divers, professional divers work in formal settings like dive centres or liveaboards (LOB), guiding and educating others while promoting safe diving practices. See professional courses here.

What PADI Professional courses does The Submersibles offer?

We offer a range of PADI Professional courses designed to help you grow as a diver and a leader. Our professional courses include:

a.     PADI Divemaster (DM): Become a dive leader and help divers improve their skills.

b.     PADI Assistant Instructor (AI): Gain teaching experience and learn to assist PADI Instructors in training courses.

c.     PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI): Take the next step and start teaching others to dive.

d.     PADI Specialty Instructor: Gain the ability to teach specialty diving courses, such as Deep Diver, Night Diver, and Digital Underwater Photography, expanding your teaching portfolio and divers’ experiences.

e.     PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT): Stand out as an elite instructor qualified to teach multiple specialty courses while mentoring advanced divers and advancing your professional career.

Our courses are designed to provide both practical experience and a deeper understanding of diving, ensuring you're ready to work as a professional in the dive industry.

Are your courses insured?

Yes, PADI Insurance covers all students and crew members during course activities, ensuring your peace of mind.

How can I get involved in marine conservation?

Join initiatives like ocean clean-ups, PADI AWARE courses, and Coral Reef Restoration dives organised by The Submersibles. Small actions can make a big impact! If you’re a company looking for a meaningful way to help our environment, you can also sponsor an ocean clean-up dive in Singapore! Learn more about our conservation efforts here.
